HASLER TELEX UNIT

The Ascom Telex Unit is the Hasler Telex Unit. The Ascom Telex Unit is a direct interface which can connect your computer system to the worldwide telex network of over 1.5 million users. Any computer with an RS232C connection is capable of linking the telex network to your desk. In conjunction with the Ascom Telex Unit your familiar, existing computer equipment can be used to prepare, send and receive telexes. Telex management software is available for all major types of host computer, from PCs right up to mainframes. The Ascom Telex Unit is PTT approved for connection to telex networks in over 45 countries around the world.

The Ascom Telex Unit provides a comprehensive range of functions:

  • Automatic dialling and redialling with full answerback checking.
  • Automatic retries on call failure or on receipt of a service signal from the telex exchange.
  • Automatic reception of incoming calls and routing to host machine or separate printer.
  • Simple host protocol allows full monitoring of message status.
  • Full conversational working available.
  • Telex Line connection meets all major international requirements.

The Ascom Telex Unit is an intelligent modem which provides an interface between a host computer and a telex line. It has been designed for ease of operation and connection to any computer which has RS232C capability. The Ascom Telex Unit is very reliable, and because by design it is interactive with the host computer, it has a greater flexibility of operation, than that which can be achieved by "store and forward" devices. The same host protocol is used for Ascom Telex Units worldwide. Host computers on which the Ascom Telex Unit has been implemented include: IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 and compatibles, Data General, DEC (PDPs and VAX), HP3000, ICL, NCR, WANG and IBM 3x/AS4OO range and many more. Versions of the Telex Unit are available around the world, making it especially suitable for multinational Companies to use in various locations with complete confidence. The best testimony to the Ascom Telex Unit is the large number of computer Companies that use it as an integral part of their own products - and, of course, the installed base of over 25,000 units worldwide.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY

HOST CONNECTION

Telex calls are initiated by a simple dial command followed by the required telex number and optional expected answerback. On connection, the host sends the message text and the call is progressed by the unit. On completion, the host is advised of a good call and confirmation of received answerbacks is given. Should a call fail for any reason, the host is advised immediately and has the option to make a second attempt or to try a new call. The host is regularly polled by the Telex Unit to ensure security. If the host is unable to process telexes, the incoming line can be blocked or routed to a printer for hard copy. If the Hasler 1010 Baudot Monitor Printer is connected to the Telex Unit, all incoming and outgoing telexes are printed as they occur plus any service signals received. The system may be configured to print incoming telexes if the host is powered off.

COPE CONVERSION

The Ascom Telex Unit converts ASCII to the telex character set (Baudot) and vice versa, Lower case is converted to upper case. Any non-convertible characters are transmitted as a question mark.

CALL FAILURE

Should a telex not be successfully sent, the Telex Unit transmits the reason for the call failure to the host together with a call failure code. The automatic retry pattern varies depending on the call failure code.
